IHG One Rewards

Independent1 active alertLast reviewed May 2026

IHG One Rewards is the loyalty program for IHG Hotels & Resorts - Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, Kimpton, InterContinental, Six Senses, Vignette Collection, and Regent. The program runs on fully dynamic pricing (no published category chart since 2022), which means the same Holiday Inn Express can swing from 12,000 points one weekend to 30,000+ the next based on the cash rate. IHG points are commonly valued around 0.5 cents each by major points sites - which puts the program firmly in the "redeem against expensive cash rates" camp.

Where IHG actually earns its keep: the 4th-night-free benefit on every Reward Night stay of 4+ consecutive nights when you hold the IHG One Rewards Premier (or Premier Business) credit card. That is an automatic 25% discount on long stays, and it stacks - 8 nights cost 6 nights of points. Add the Anniversary Free Night from the same Premier card (40,000-point cap with top-off allowed from your account balance) and the program goes from "meh" to genuinely useful for the budget-tier crowd that does not get excited about Park Hyatt suites.

The cheat sheet.

IHG One Rewards uses fully dynamic pricing for Reward Nights (since 2022). There is no published category chart - the points cost varies daily by property, date, day of week, and cash-rate demand. Reward Nights start as low as 5,000 points and can exceed 150,000+ at top luxury properties.

Observed point ranges by IHG brand tier (2026 - observational, not fixed bands):

Brand Tier Brands Typical Range (per night)
Essentials Holiday Inn Express, Holiday Inn, avid, Candlewood Suites, Staybridge Suites, Garner, Atwell Suites 10,000 - 40,000 (secondary US markets); 30,000 - 50,000 (high-demand US / Europe leisure)
Premium Crowne Plaza, voco, Hotel Indigo, EVEN, Vignette Collection 25,000 - 80,000
Luxury & Lifestyle Kimpton, InterContinental, Six Senses, Regent 40,000 - 130,000+ (luxury urban / aspirational)
All-Inclusive Select Iberostar Beachfront Resorts (Caribbean, Mexico) Bookable on points where eligible; dynamic pricing applies

Same property can swing 12K to 50K+ points across dates - always check before booking.

Anniversary Free Night Reward (FNR) - how it works (Chase IHG Premier / Premier Business):

The IHG Anniversary Free Night Reward differs from Hilton's mechanic in one key way: it has a fixed 40,000-point cap PER NIGHT rather than a "Standard Room Reward" classification.

  • 40,000-point cap - the FNR is valid for any property pricing at 40,000 points or less.
  • Top-off allowed from member account - if the property prices above 40,000, you can add points from your IHG One Rewards balance to make up the difference. So a 60,000-point property = FNR + 20,000 points from your account.
  • One night per certificate - unlike multi-night bookings, each FNR applies to a single night.

FNR earn paths (current 2026):

  • Chase IHG One Rewards Premier (personal): receive 1 Anniversary Free Night Reward each card year. Earn a second FNR (also 40K cap) after $60,000 in calendar-year card spend.
  • Chase IHG One Rewards Premier Business: receive 1 Anniversary FNR each card year. Same $60K calendar-year spend triggers a second FNR.
  • Chase IHG One Rewards Traveler (no annual fee): does NOT include an Anniversary FNR.

4th Night Free Reward rule - the strongest cost-reducing mechanic IHG offers. On any Reward Night stay of 4+ consecutive nights at the same property, the 4th night costs 0 points. Requirements:

  • Hold any current IHG One Rewards Chase credit card (Premier, Premier Business, or Traveler) at time of booking.
  • Stay must be 4+ consecutive nights at the same property under one reservation.
  • Stackable: 8 consecutive nights = 6 nights of points. 12 consecutive nights = 9 nights of points.
  • Applies to Standard Room Reward Nights. Does not apply to Points & Cash, Suite Night Awards, or paid stays.
  • Unlimited use per year - no annual cap on how many stays can use the benefit.

Sweet spots

Where your points punch above their weight.

Where this currency genuinely shines.

Show me the picks
  • 4th night free with the Premier or Premier Business card - on every Reward Night stay of 4+ consecutive nights at the same property, the 4th night costs 0 points. This is the single best reason to hold an IHG card. An automatic 25% discount on Caribbean, Mexico, European, or any long stays. Stackable: 8 nights = 6 nights of points.
  • Holiday Inn Express with included breakfast under 25K points - Holiday Inn Express properties often price around 12,000-20,000 points/night in secondary US cities and many European leisure destinations. The included breakfast lifts a baseline ~0.5 cpp redemption to an effective ~0.7-0.8 cpp once you factor in the food cost.
  • Anniversary Free Night Cert top-off at high-cost properties - the Premier card's 40K Free Night Cert can be topped off with points from your account if the property prices above 40K. Use this at InterContinental properties priced at 60-80K - you are effectively converting 20-40K extra points into a $400-600 night.
  • Iberostar all-inclusive on points (where eligible) - select Iberostar beachfront properties in the Caribbean and Mexico are bookable on IHG points. The 4th-night-free benefit may apply on qualifying reward bookings, which makes 4-night all-inclusive vacations meaningfully cheaper than booking direct.
  • Diamond Elite via $40K calendar-year card spend - the easiest published path to Diamond outside of 70 paid nights. Welcome amenity at participating brands (often breakfast), complimentary upgrades subject to availability, and 100% bonus points add up if you stay at IHG even occasionally.
  • Vignette Collection and Kimpton properties under 30K points - the boutique-tier brands often price well below their cash equivalents, especially in secondary US cities. Worth searching when planning a domestic weekend.

Lounge access

Club lounges and breakfast: who gets in.

Who gets in, who doesn't, and the carve-outs.

See the rules

At IHG, "lounge access" means in-hotel club lounges - think Club InterContinental, Crowne Plaza Club, Kimpton evening social hour - not airport lounges. IHG has no airline alliance and no Priority Pass relationship.

Diamond Elite welcome amenity: Diamond members get a welcome amenity choice at check-in that typically includes a breakfast option at participating brands. Brand-level exclusions apply - Six Senses, Regent, and select InterContinentals offer a different welcome amenity mix rather than breakfast.

Club lounges by brand:

  • InterContinental Club InterContinental floors: paid access tier, or included for guests booked into Club rooms or higher categories. Properties with this offering vary - it is not at every InterContinental.
  • Crowne Plaza Club Lounge: select properties offer access for guests booked into Crowne Plaza Club Floor rooms. Not all Crowne Plazas have club floors.
  • Kimpton evening social hour: complimentary wine and snacks for all guests at all Kimpton properties. Not status-gated.
  • Vignette Collection and Six Senses: lounge offerings vary by property; check on a property-by-property basis.

Platinum and Diamond members at properties with executive or club lounges may receive complimentary access as a welcome amenity choice or via upgraded rooms, depending on the property and availability.

How to spend

The high-leverage moves. Read this before you transfer a single mile.

The smart-money plays.

Get the playbook
  • Standard Reward Nights at IHG's 7,000+ properties. Dynamic pricing - can sometimes start as low as 5,000 points and rise above 100,000+ at luxury properties. No blackout dates.
  • Points & Cash - mix points with cash on Reward Night bookings. Useful when short on points or when a partial redemption is better value than full points.
  • Anniversary Free Night Certificates from the Chase IHG One Rewards Premier (40K cap, top-off from account balance allowed) and Premier Business cards. Best deployed at high-cash-rate properties where the 40K-plus-top-off math beats paying cash.
  • Confirmable Suite Upgrade Awards earned as Milestone Reward choices at 20, 40, and 70 stays. Apply to paid stays or Reward Nights (not Advance Purchase rates or FNC redemptions). Call IHG Customer Care between 24 hours and 14 days before check-in to confirm.
  • Iberostar all-inclusive resorts - select Iberostar beachfront properties (Caribbean, Mexico) are bookable on IHG points where eligible. 4th-night-free benefit may stack on qualifying reward bookings.
  • Convert IHG points to airline miles at 5 IHG : 1 mile for most of 40+ airline partners (AA, Delta, KLM/Flying Blue, JAL, Singapore KrisFlyer, Virgin Atlantic, etc.). Typically poor value - airline points generally outrun hotel points - but useful for topping off a specific airline balance.
  • IHG Experiences and merchandise catalog - low value per point; avoid unless sitting on expiring points.

Tips & quirks

Resort fees, blackout dates, points expiry, the stuff nobody tells you until you've been burned once.

The fine print, decoded.

Spill the gotchas
  • Points expire after 12 months of inactivity for Club Member tier - one "earn" or "redeem" activity every 12 months keeps them alive. Silver Elite and above: points never expire (regardless of activity). Per IHG's published terms, Free Night Certificate usage from the Premier card does NOT count as activity for expiry purposes.
  • Fully dynamic pricing since 2022 - no category chart. Same property can swing from 12K to 50K+ points depending on date and cash rate. Reward Nights can start as low as 5,000 points; luxury properties can exceed 100K+ per night.
  • 4th-night-free on award stays with the Chase IHG One Rewards Premier, Premier Business, or Traveler card - every 4th consecutive night at the same property costs 0 points. Stackable: 8 nights = 6 nights of points.
  • Free Night Certificate top-off: the Anniversary Free Night from the Premier card (40,000-point cap) can be topped off with points from your account if the property prices above 40K. This unlocks properties that would otherwise be out of reach.
  • Second Anniversary Free Night: Premier cardholders earn a second Anniversary Free Night (also 40K cap) after $60,000 in calendar-year spend. Premier Business: similar mechanic.
  • Diamond via card spend: $40,000 in calendar-year purchases on the Premier or Premier Business card qualifies the cardmember for Diamond Elite status through December 31 of the following year - the easiest published path to Diamond outside of 70 paid nights.
  • $20K Premier card spend perk: $20,000 calendar-year spend earns a $100 statement credit and 10,000 bonus points - a stepping stone for cardholders pacing toward the $40K Diamond benchmark. (Note: $20K on the Traveler card earns a status bump to Gold Elite instead.)
  • Reward Night Discounts: 15% off Reward Nights at new and renovated hotels - a niche but real savings lever worth checking before you book.
  • Points purchase: Members can buy up to 200,000 additional points per year if their balance runs short - useful for topping off a specific redemption without transferring from another account.
  • EQP-for-sale (seasonal): IHG has historically run Elite Qualifying Points sales in late December as a fast-track to status. Pricing and discount levels vary year to year - don't count on it as a standing path.
  • Point transfers between member accounts: $5 per 1,000 points, processed via Points.com. Steep fee - generally not worth it unless topping off for a specific redemption.
  • Kimpton Inner Circle: invite-only recognition program within the Kimpton brand, separate from core IHG elite tiers. Not a tier "above Diamond" - reserved for top Kimpton-specific spenders.
  • InterContinental Ambassador: separate paid status program tied to the InterContinental brand only. As of October 2, 2024, costs $225 USD or 45,000 IHG points per year. Benefits include guaranteed 4pm late checkout, one complimentary weekend night with a paid night, and welcome amenity at InterContinental properties.
  • PointBreaks is dead: the old quarterly 5K-15K point promotional list ran from ~2010 to ~2018 and has not been revived. Don't go looking for it.
