Flying Blue is the joint Air France–KLM–Transavia frequent flyer program — and quietly one of the most useful tools a US points-collector can own. It's a SkyTeam program with a broad 1:1 transfer-partner lineup: Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One, Bilt, and Wells Fargo.
The miles aren't always cheap — Flying Blue uses dynamic pricing and fuel surcharges can run high on premium cabins — but monthly Promo Rewards typically offer up to 25% off select routes, and Air France or KLM business class to Europe is often reachable from around 60,000 miles one-way at the saver level when availability cooperates.
Bank of America Air France KLM Visa Signature launched January 21, 2026, replacing the prior Mastercard product at the same $89 annual fee. Earn 3x miles on Air France / KLM / SkyTeam-partner direct bookings, 3x on dining (new), and 1.5x on everything else. The card's headline upgrade is the XP-earning structure: 20 XP every account anniversary, +80 XP at $15K in annual spend, +60 XP at $25K - up to 160 XP per year from the card alone. The launch welcome offer was 70,000 miles + 100 XP after $3,000 spend (which gets you instant Silver); the standing public offer is 50,000 miles + 100 XP after $2,000 spend.

Recent months have priced select North American cities to Europe from 18,750 miles one way in economy and 45,000 in business class; the cities change monthly, so check the current list before booking.

Flying Blue lounge access is governed by SkyTeam alliance rules, not by Flying Blue itself. Per SkyTeam's official policy:
- Eligible passengers: SkyTeam Elite Plus members (Flying Blue Gold, Platinum, Ultimate), plus any passenger ticketed in First or Business Class on a SkyTeam-operated flight.
- No reservations required.
- Network size: more than 750 lounges worldwide across SkyTeam member airlines and partners.
- Guesting: Elite Plus members may bring one guest, provided the guest is traveling on the same SkyTeam-operated flight.
- No paid access via SkyTeam.com. Some individual carriers may sell day passes at their own lounges; rules vary.
- Flying Blue Silver (SkyTeam Elite, not Elite Plus): does not receive standard alliance lounge access. Any Silver-specific lounge perks would come from individual carriers, not from the alliance.

- Award flights on Air France, KLM, Transavia, and SkyTeam partners — the highest-value use, especially when paired with monthly Promo Rewards
- Cabin upgrades on paid tickets, available with Air France, KLM, Delta, Aeromexico, China Airlines, Korean Air, and select other partners
- Hotel stays, car rentals, and travel extras (baggage, lounge access, Wi-Fi) — usually worse cents-per-mile than flights; save the miles for the runway when you can
- Flying Blue Store merchandise and gift cards — last-resort redemption; mile value is typically poor here

- How to change or cancel an award: Flying Blue reward tickets usually have to be changed or canceled by calling Flying Blue, especially for partner-operated flights like a Delta, Virgin Atlantic, or Kenya Airways flight booked with miles. Some Air France or KLM operated tickets can be managed online through Manage Booking or My Trip, but that varies by fare. You can make changes up until the check-in deadline, but never after the flight departs.
- Fees: A change or cancellation fee may apply, and it depends on your ticket's fare conditions rather than a single flat rate. If your new flight costs more miles or taxes, you pay the difference. When you cancel an eligible reward ticket, your miles are typically redeposited, minus any applicable fee.
- If your flight is delayed or changed: When Air France or KLM cancels, significantly delays, or reschedules your flight, that is an involuntary change, and you can rebook or request a refund without the usual change fee. On flights to or from the EU, EU rules (EC 261/2004) go further, entitling you to cash compensation of 250 to 600 euros for long delays and cancellations within the airline's control, and these protections apply to award tickets, not just paid ones.
- How to reach Flying Blue: In the US, call +1 800 375-8723 for reward-ticket changes and cancellations. The international line is +33 9 69 39 36 54. Have your booking reference and Flying Blue number ready, and call well before departure.

- Miles expire after 24 months of inactivity under current policy. Any eligible activity (flight, partner purchase, hotel stay) typically resets the clock for your entire balance.
- Policy update effective May 4, 2026: elites, Extra subscribers, co-brand cardholders, and minors are exempt from expiration. Confirm current rules on flyingblue.com before booking.
- Family pooling, no fee — up to 8 members (2 adults, 6 children). Kids' miles do not expire under current rules until age 18; kids get a 25% discount on award tickets.
- Free stopovers in Paris or Amsterdam are permitted on many award tickets — useful for stretching one award into two destinations. Routing rules apply.
- Fuel surcharges can run high on premium cabins — budget for roughly $300–500 USD in cash on transatlantic business class redemptions.
- Promo Rewards typically release near the start of each month for that calendar month. Quantities are limited.
- Bilt is unique — transfers run on Rent Day (the 1st) only and have included random bonuses on that day.
- Status uses XP (Experience Points), not miles. They are tracked separately.

- BoA Air France KLM Visa Signature (Jan 21, 2026 launch): $89 AF, 3x SkyTeam direct bookings, 3x dining, 1.5x everything else. Up to 160 XP/year from the card structure (20 anniversary + 80 at $15K + 60 at $25K). Replaced the previous Mastercard at the same fee.
- Elite status unlocks far more saver award space (official benefit, late 2025): Flying Blue Platinum and Ultimate members get priority access to the lowest Miles fares, so when they search Air France/KLM awards they see many more business-class saver seats than a no-status member on the same flights. Dates that show only expensive award pricing to a general member can appear at the saver rate for a Platinum. Important: this is Flying Blue's OWN status, earned by flying Air France/KLM or through a status challenge - SkyTeam status from Delta does not unlock it. Worth pursuing if you redeem AF/KLM business class regularly.
- Tiered award fares (from September 8, 2026): Air France and KLM award tickets now come as Light, Standard, or Flex fares. The cheapest Light awards drop perks like a checked bag and free changes, so keeping today's benefits costs 20 to 30 percent more miles. This applies only to Air France and KLM operated flights, not partner airlines, and elite members keep their benefits on any fare.
