Our take

Great for regular Delta flyers who value convenience. Frustrating for anyone chasing predictable award prices.

SkyMiles is a program you use because Delta already runs your travel, not because it treats your miles well. If Delta owns the convenient routes from your airport, earning is easy and the miles are simple to spend. If your goal is squeezing reliable value out of every mile, this one will wear you down: the best redemptions take flexibility, patience, and a willingness to book away from Delta itself. Status now rewards spending more than it rewards loyalty. Come for the network and the convenience, not the bargain.

Best forFrequent Delta flyers, travelers near a Delta hub, and anyone who values easy earning over predictable award prices.

Watch out forA poor fit if you want predictable award prices, or if you expect to earn meaningful status by flying alone without putting spend on a card.

Partners to check first

You can often book the same Delta flight for fewer miles through one of these partner programs than with Delta's own SkyMiles. It varies route by route, so check before you spend SkyMiles.

Use SkyMiles to book on these partners

Or spend your SkyMiles on a partner's own premium cabin, which is usually where they stretch furthest.

Delta is a fortress hub airline and the only US member of SkyTeam, so SkyMiles put you on Delta plus Air France/KLM, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic, and the rest of SkyTeam.

  • Alliance: SkyTeam
  • Pricing: fully dynamic, no published chart since ~2015
  • Hubs: Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, Salt Lake, plus JFK, LAX, Seattle, Boston
  • Miles: no expiration

Why it matters Because award prices float with the cash fare, the same seat can cost very different amounts from one day to the next, so always check the award calendar before you commit miles.

SkyMiles gets you on Delta and its partner airlines, so one balance can book Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic, LATAM, and Aeromexico awards. Delta's own awards run on no fixed chart, so what a seat costs in miles moves with the date, route, demand, and cash fare, and it can swing hard from one day to the next. Pull up the award calendar and compare a few dates before you commit any miles.

The real value usually sits on partner metal rather than Delta's own flights, so price the same trip on a partner before you book. Medallion status now runs on spending (Medallion Qualification Dollars), not miles flown, Sky Club access has tightened, and Basic Economy is shut out of the lounges entirely. Your miles do not expire, which is genuinely rare.

Program background: Delta is the senior US member of SkyTeam and runs revenue sharing joint ventures across the major travel corridors, which is why its partner award list runs so deep. This page is the carrier overview; the alliance wide Sky Club rules and SkyTeam Elite crossover live on the SkyTeam page.

Award pricing

Delta SkyMiles award pricing (dynamic - no published chart)

Delta SkyMiles uses fully dynamic pricing with no published award chart since around 2015. Award costs scale with cash fare on a per-flight basis.

Because prices follow the cash fare, the same route can cost very different amounts from one date to the next. Search delta.com with "Shop with Miles" ticked and use the award calendar to find the cheapest dates before you transfer points.

Sweet-spot strategy: Flash sales surface much lower rates (e.g., Delta One US-Europe at 75K-95K one-way during sales). Watch SkyMiles flash deals and Delta promo emails.

Partner chart: SkyTeam partner awards (Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Aeromexico, Virgin Atlantic, China Eastern, Garuda) priced via the same dynamic engine - typically more expensive than booking via the partner's own program. Use Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, or Korean SKYPASS to book Delta-operated metal at fixed-chart rates.

For today's pricing, search delta.com directly.

You can't move Chase or Capital One points to Delta. American Express Membership Rewards is the only bank currency that transfers, at 1:1. Hotel points transfer too, but at rates weak enough that they're only worth it to top off a balance.

  • Amex Membership Rewards: 1:1 (only bank partner)
  • Marriott Bonvoy: 3:1
  • Hilton Honors: 10:1
  • IHG One Rewards: 5:1 (phone only, up to six weeks)
  • World of Hyatt: 5:2

Why it matters Most people earn SkyMiles by flying Delta or spending on a Delta Amex, not by transferring. The transfer paths are a backstop, not a strategy.

Book at delta.com or in the Fly Delta app; awards on Delta and most partners can be changed or cancelled online right up to departure.

  • No change or redeposit fee on award tickets starting in the US or Canada
  • Basic Economy awards are the exception, with fees and changes often not allowed
  • Pay With Miles, a Delta Amex card benefit, knocks about a cent a mile off any Delta fare
  • Free rebooking or a full miles refund on a Delta cancellation or big schedule change

Why it matters Free changes on most award tickets keep SkyMiles flexible, and for Delta Amex cardholders Pay With Miles sets a rough floor so a balance never loses all its value, even when the redemption rate isn't the best around.

There are two different partner plays here, and it helps to keep them apart: spending your miles on a partner's premium cabin, versus booking a Delta operated flight through a partner program that may price it lower.

  • Value play: spend SkyMiles on partner premium cabins (Virgin Atlantic Upper Class transatlantic, Korean Air business to Asia, Air France and KLM), where miles tend to stretch furthest
  • Cheaper Delta play: book a Delta operated flight through a partner program like Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (US short haul) or Flying Blue, which can sometimes price below Delta's own award
  • Pay With Miles gives Delta Amex cardholders a rough cent a mile floor on Delta flights

Why it matters Delta's own long haul business class tends to run expensive in miles, so the stronger move is usually a partner, whether you are spending miles on partner metal or booking Delta itself through a partner program.

Medallion status is earned through spending (Medallion Qualification Dollars), not miles flown, and Sky Club access has tightened over the last two years.

  • Four tiers: Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond
  • Status runs on spend (MQD) only, a 2023 overhaul that took effect for the 2024 program year
  • Basic Economy never gets Sky Club access
  • Sky Club entry limited to 3 hours before departure (connections exempt)

Why it matters A Delta Amex is now one of the main paths to status through MQD boosts, which is exactly what Delta designed the program to do.

The gotchas here are mostly about the lounge door and the pricing screen, not the award rules.

  • Basic Economy = no Sky Club access, ever
  • Gold/Platinum/Diamond in international Main Cabin lose Club access
  • Delta One Lounges need a Delta One seat that day, award or upgrade included; status or a card alone won't get you in
  • Miles don't expire for now, so recheck the terms before you bank on it

Why it matters Most SkyMiles surprises land at the lounge entrance or when a dynamic award price spikes, so plan for both.

Delta's American Express cards are the backbone of the program: they earn miles, drive status through MQD boosts, and the premium tiers carry Sky Club access.
