British Airways is the Heathrow-based flag carrier of the UK (founded 1974 from the merger of BOAC and BEA) and the flagship of IAG, parent of Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling, and LEVEL. The fleet runs roughly 280 aircraft: A380, 777-200/300ER, 787-8/9/10, A350-1000, A320 family, with A220s incoming. Hubs are LHR (Heathrow) primary, LGW (Gatwick) secondary leisure, and LCY (London City) for European business routes. US gateways are extensive - 22+ US cities served from LHR including JFK, EWR, BOS, IAD, MIA, ORD, ATL, DFW, IAH, DEN, LAX, SFO, SEA, MSP, RDU, BNA, ORL, AUS, PHX, SAN, PHL, CLT.
The Club Suite rollout (2019-2026) is BA's biggest cabin story: a new Business class with 1-2-1 layout and a privacy door, on A350-1000s, retrofitted A380s, and retrofitted 777-300ERs. As of May 2026, most US routes have Club Suite; notable holdouts include JNB, KUL, MEX, MIA, SCL, NRT (mostly older A380 / un-refurbed 787-9). For US travelers, the BA story is dominated by one structural reality: BA-direct Avios redemption on BA metal carries enormous fuel surcharges (around $700-1,100 one-way in J transatlantic). The fix is sister-Avios redemption: Iberia Plus or Aer Lingus AerClub Avios (via Combine My Avios) book identical BA metal at significantly lower fuel surcharges, especially on UK-Ireland-US routings via Aer Lingus. BA operates the Concorde Room (F-only) at LHR T5 and the Chelsea Lounge (shared with American) at JFK T8, plus the First Wing at LHR T5 (dedicated First Class security and lounge entry from check-in to plane). Galleries First serves F passengers and oneworld Emerald (BA Gold + above). Galleries Club Lounge and Galleries North/South serve oneworld Sapphire (BA Silver) and Business passengers. Across the network, oneworld Emerald and Sapphire from any partner (American AAdvantage, Cathay, Qatar, etc.) gets reciprocal access. American Admirals Clubs are accessible via oneworld Sapphire on same-day international.

- How to change: Many changes to simple Reward Flights can be made online in Manage My Booking. You need to call British Airways if you are changing a British Airways Reward Flight from an off-peak date to a peak date, or from a peak date to an off-peak date and need an immediate refund of Avios, if the booking was made using any type of voucher such as a Companion Voucher or Travel Together Ticket, if it contains a connecting flight, or if it has been upgraded using Avios. The reservations line is 1-800-AIRWAYS (1-800-247-9297), daily 7am to 1am EST.
- Fees: Changing the date, time or cabin of a Reward Flight, or canceling and getting your Avios back, costs USD 55 per person, per ticket for Reward Flights departing from North America. It is CAD 58 for flights departing from Canada, GBP 35 from the UK, and EUR 42.50 from Ireland and Europe. Doing it through the Service Center adds USD 25, CAD 25, GBP 15 or EUR 15. Booking online is free. Changes must be made at least 24 hours before departure and are subject to availability.
- If you cancel: Cancel more than 24 hours before the scheduled departure of your first flight and the Avios are credited back to your account, after the fee. Nothing comes back on a partly flown booking. Cancel inside 24 hours and the Avios are not credited back, unless an event beyond your control stopped you traveling. In that case you need an unused reward, you must tell British Airways promptly, show evidence if asked, and pay the applicable fee. If you simply do not show up, the airline cancels your onward and return flights and the Avios are not credited back.
- Status: Gold members pay no additional Service Center fee, and changes to Gold Priority Reward bookings are free.

Club World drops from 500 to 200 extra tier points per flight and First from 650 to 300 on the base fare, and long haul Premium Economy drops from 275 to 175. Flights departing between April 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027 keep the old rates, as do flights booked before November 25, 2026 at any travel date. Short haul and long haul economy are unchanged.
