Good to know before you apply
  • The 30,000-mile welcome bonus requires $1,000 in 3 months - that's roughly $333/month, which is about as low-stakes as welcome bonus math gets, and the extra 10,000 miles for adding an authorized user in that same window is essentially free if you were planning to add one anyway, so don't leave it on the table.
  • The 5x on United flights is a blended number - it's 3x from your MileagePlus membership plus 2x from the card, so if you're comparing earn rates across no-annual-fee cards, you're not getting 5x purely from swiping plastic, and the 2x card-only layer is the one that actually belongs to you.
  • NO free checked bags without hitting a real spend threshold - the 2 free checked bags only unlock after $10,000 in calendar year purchases, which is the same bar as the 10% award flight discount, so both of the card's headline perks are gated behind the same number and neither one is passive.
  • The 25% back on inflight purchases is a statement credit applied to food, beverages, and Wi-Fi on United-operated flights - it's a genuine recurring perk on a no-fee card and one of the few benefits here that doesn't require you to hit a secondary spend bar first.
  • The 0% intro APR on purchases runs for the first 12 months from account opening - it's a real sweetener if you have a big purchase coming and want to spread payments, but the variable rate that kicks in after is meaningful, so this one rewards people who actually plan to pay it down before the window closes.
  • The 2x on transit is broader than it looks - rideshare, tolls, train tickets, and mass transit all count, which means everyday commuter spend is quietly stacking MileagePlus miles on a card that costs you nothing to carry.
  • Even at no annual fee, you get 25% back as a statement credit on United inflight food, beverages, and Wi-Fi - a small but genuine in-flight perk.

The United Gateway Card is the no-annual-fee entry ticket into United's MileagePlus ecosystem — solid for casual United flyers who want to earn 5x on United flights and bank a little extra with 2x at gas stations and on transit. Spend $10K in a calendar year and you'll unlock checked bags plus discounted award flights, making it surprisingly practical for a free card.
