United is removing the flights route to Premier status, which matters most if you've been qualifying with flights plus fewer points. From January 1, 2027, premier qualifying points (PQP) are the only way to qualify, premier qualifying flights (PQF) are gone, and 1K takes 32,000 PQP. Anything you earn through December 31, 2026 still counts under the old rules, so if you're close to a tier, this year is the one to finish it. Status earned in 2026 lasts through January 31, 2028.
Here are the 2027 numbers, with the 2026 flights route beside them:
- Silver: 6,000 PQP (2026 also allowed 5,000 PQP plus 15 flights)
- Gold: 12,000 PQP (2026 also allowed 10,000 plus 30 flights)
- Platinum: 18,000 PQP (2026 also allowed 15,000 plus 45 flights)
- 1K: 32,000 PQP (2026 allowed 28,000 PQP, or 22,000 plus 60 flights)
You still need at least four United or United Express flights. Silver, Gold and Platinum match the 2026 PQP only numbers, so what disappears is the lower points route. For 1K, the bar itself goes up. Same tier, bigger ask.
The PQP head start United gives status holders at the start of the year changed too. It used to go to everyone who earned status. For 2027 it needs an eligible United card, and the amount is 300 (Silver), 600 (Gold), 900 (Platinum) or 1,600 (1K) PQP. You must be the primary cardmember, have the card account active by December 31, 2026, and hold Premier status on February 1, 2027.
