Convert Rakuten cash back to Amex points with the right card

A single setting in your Rakuten account reroutes future earnings straight into your Amex Membership Rewards balance, opening the door to transfer value cash simply can't match.

Your Rakuten cash back is quietly pulling double duty - or it could be. Most people leave it sitting as a statement credit or a check. If you have any MR-earning Amex card, there's a one-time flip in your account settings that routes all future Rakuten earnings into your MR balance instead. Same shopping. Same stores. Dramatically more travel value.

The Flip: Cash Back to MR Points

When you link an eligible Amex card to Rakuten, every purchase through the portal earns Amex points instead of cash back. The math is clean: 1% cash back equals 1x MR per dollar. A 10% offer becomes 10x MR per dollar.

A $200 purchase at a retailer running 10% back nets 2,000 MR points instead of $20.

MR earns its keep when you transfer. Points routed through Membership Rewards transfer partners can deliver multiples of what cash back ever could - on purchases you were already making.

Which Cards Qualify

The most popular eligible cards are the American Express Gold Card, the American Express Green Card, and The Platinum Card from American Express.

Co-branded cards (Marriott, Hilton, Delta SkyMiles) don't qualify because they don't earn MR. Corporate cards aren't eligible. And the Rakuten American Express Card itself is out - it's a cash-back card by design.

One thing most people don't realize: you don't have to pay with an Amex card at checkout. As long as your Rakuten and Amex MR accounts are linked, you earn MR no matter which card you use.

How to Set It Up (90 Seconds)

Sign in to Rakuten, go to Account Settings, and find "How would you like to get paid?" Select "Switch to Membership Rewards points." You'll be prompted to log in to Amex to verify, and you're done.

Rakuten's official terms don't address whether you can later switch back to cash back, so if you ever want to revert, contact Rakuten support first to confirm.

When the Points Arrive

Rakuten pays out quarterly: around February 15, May 15, August 15, and November 15. You need at least 501 confirmed points before the transfer date - anything less rolls to the next quarter. Online and in-store earnings typically take 3-14 weeks to confirm, so these aren't instant points.

If you need MR for a specific redemption, don't count on Rakuten to top off your balance the day before transfer.

Jill's Take

Use Rakuten as your always-on MR accumulator. Every quarterly batch - May 15, August 15 - is a deposit toward whatever's on your board: an upgrade, a business class award, a long-haul reward seat. You don't need to think about it. You just need the toggle flipped to MR.

The Big Fat Check had its moment. Let it go.
