Amtrak Guest Rewards

IndependentLast reviewed Oct 2026

Amtrak Guest Rewards is Amtrak's loyalty program, and the currency is simple: points. You earn 2 points per $1 spent on Amtrak travel when your membership number is on the booking, and you spend them on train travel, upgrade coupons, station lounge passes and gift cards. Reward travel starts at 400 points, and Points & Cash starts at 100 points.

For a points and miles reader, the story is the transfer side. Bilt Points now transfer to Amtrak at 2:1, added September 23, 2026. Chase, Amex, Capital One and Citi were not listed as Amtrak transfer partners when we last checked (October 2026), so this is a narrow on ramp, not a hub. Amtrak publishes a starting price and no fixed award chart that we can document, so check the price for your own trip before you move any points.

Award chart

The actual numbers. Get your nerd on, memorize the cheap ones.

The cheat sheet.

See the rates →

Amtrak does not publish a fixed award chart that we can document here. What it does publish is a starting price: reward travel from 400 points, and Points & Cash from 100 points with a 100 point minimum balance. Check the price for your own trip and date before you commit.

Transfers in: Bilt Points transfer to Amtrak at 2:1 (two Bilt Points for one Amtrak point), added September 23, 2026. Transfers move in 1,000 point increments, with a 2,000 Bilt point minimum for Bilt Blue members, and you need to link your Amtrak Guest Rewards account first. Chase, Amex, Capital One and Citi were not listed as Amtrak transfer partners when we last checked (October 2026).

Sweet spots

Where your points punch above their weight.

Where this currency genuinely shines.

Show me the picks →
  • The 400 point floor: Amtrak says reward travel starts at 400 points, and Points & Cash starts at 100 points with a 100 point minimum balance. A short trip can cost very few points. The catch: that is a starting price, not a promise for every route, so look at the price on your own date before you transfer anything.
  • Bilt as the way in: Bilt Points transfer at 2:1, so two Bilt points become one Amtrak point. The catch: that ratio is the only way in from a major bank currency, and Chase, Amex, Capital One and Citi were not listed when we last checked (October 2026).
  • Upgrade coupons from 2,500 points: A one class upgrade coupon is valid for 12 months, covers a one way trip and can be used within 12 hours of departure. The catch: the coupon covers one class up on a single one way trip, so it is not a standing perk.
  • Gift cards from 2,500 points: A $25 gift card starts at 2,500 points. The catch: redemptions are capped at 2 per 24 hours and $300 per 7 days.

Tips & quirks

Stopover rules, surcharges, the stuff nobody tells you until you've been burned once.

The fine print, decoded.

Spill the gotchas →
  • Earning on trains: 2 points per $1 spent on Amtrak travel with your membership number on the booking. Business class and Acela Business earn a 25% bonus, Acela First earns 50%, and coach earns no bonus. If you use a free one class upgrade coupon, the bonus follows your original class.
  • What does not earn: No points on reward tickets, 7000 series Thruway, the Canadian portion of Amtrak and VIA joint trips, discounted group fares, or tickets bought with an Amtrak Transportation Voucher. A ticket part paid with a voucher earns on the cash part only.
  • Tier bonus on top: Select adds 25% to your travel points, Select Plus adds 50% and Select Executive adds 100%. The tier bonus does not apply to partner points or bought points.
  • Points post slowly: Allow up to 3 weeks. Missing points claims must be filed within 120 days.
  • Bilt transfers in at 2:1: Two Bilt Points for one Amtrak point, added September 23, 2026. Transfers move in 1,000 point increments with a 2,000 Bilt point minimum for Bilt Blue members, and you need to link your Amtrak Guest Rewards account first. Chase, Amex, Capital One and Citi were not listed when we last checked (October 2026).
  • Buying points: 500 point increments through Points.com, capped at 50,000 a year for base members. Select tiers have no cap. Bought points do not count toward tier status.
  • Sharing points: $0.01 per point, in 1,000 point increments, capped at 100,000 a year. Select Executive has no cap.
  • Changes and no shows: Changing or cancelling follows the ticket's fare rules, and penalties may apply. A no show forfeits the points.
  • Two Amtrak Mastercards: Both are issued by First National Bank of Omaha. The Amtrak Guest Rewards Mastercard has a $0 annual fee, earns 2X on Amtrak travel and dining and 1X elsewhere, and has no foreign transaction fees. The Preferred Mastercard has a $99 annual fee, earns 3X on Amtrak travel, 2X on dining, travel, transit and rideshare, and 1X elsewhere, earns 1,000 TQPs per $5,000 spent, and gives a 20% rebate on onboard food and beverage. Both include a companion coupon, a one class upgrade and a station lounge pass at account opening and each anniversary, plus a 5% point rebate when you redeem for Amtrak travel. Card terms are set by the issuer and can change, so confirm on the official site.
