Amex Changes How New Membership Rewards Cards Share Points

New Amex Membership Rewards cards, personal and business, now open their own Rewards Account that you link yourself. Cancelling the last linked card forfeits that account's points immediately.

Published October 16, 2026Verified

New Amex Membership Rewards cards no longer join your existing points balance on their own, so you have to link them yourself. Effective immediately, a new personal or business card gets its own Rewards Account. Link it under Manage Connections online or in the Amex app, or by phone, and the linked accounts consolidate into one balance.

  • Cancel the last card linked to an account and its points are forfeited immediately. A Corporate Card may get up to 30 days, and New York billing addresses can keep using points for 90 days by calling the number on the back of the card

Before you cancel any card, check which other cards share its account. The last one out takes the points with it.
