Royal Brunei Airlines Royal Skies

IndependentHUBSBWNLast reviewed Oct 2026

Royal Skies is the frequent flyer program of Royal Brunei Airlines, which flies out of Brunei International Airport in Bandar Seri Begawan. It is a small program with three tiers (Blue, Silver and Elite Gold), and anyone aged 2 and up can join.

For most readers the reason to care is World of Hyatt. Hyatt points convert to Royal Skies miles at 5,000 points to 2,000 miles, so Royal Skies is a landing spot for Hyatt points if Royal Brunei flies where you want to go. Royal Brunei is not part of an airline alliance, and the official redemption pages describe awards on Royal Brunei flights only, so check the route and the mile price in the official Mileage Calculator before you convert anything.

Royal Skies does not show a printed award chart on its site. Prices come from the Mileage Calculator on the official Royal Skies pages, which prices a one way or return award for a chosen origin and destination, plus upgrade and extra baggage prices.

What the official pages state

  • Reward flights start from 8,000 Royal Skies miles, plus taxes and other charges.
  • Flight upgrade (Economy to Business Class): the miles needed vary by destination. Requires an RB Value or RB Flexi ticket.
  • Extra baggage allowance: redeemed one way in blocks of 5 kilograms.
  • Sky Lounge access at Brunei International Airport: 4,500 miles adult, 3,600 miles child aged 2 to 11.
  • Miles cannot pay taxes and fuel surcharges on award tickets and upgrades.

Cities in the Mileage Calculator: Balikpapan, Bandar Seri Begawan, Bangkok, Beijing, Chennai, Dubai, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Jeddah, Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, London, Manila, Melbourne, Seoul, Singapore, Surabaya, Taipei and Tokyo Narita.

Sweet spots

Where this currency genuinely shines.

Show me the picks →
  • Awards starting from 8,000 miles on Royal Brunei flights. The official site lists reward flights from 8,000 Royal Skies miles, and the Mileage Calculator shows the price for a specific route and direction. The catch: 8,000 is a starting price, taxes and fuel surcharges are paid in cash and cannot be covered with miles, and redemption seats depend on availability.
  • Family Plus for pooling. Up to 11 family members can pool their miles into one lead account, and the lead member's spouse receives the same Royal Skies status at no extra cost. The catch: every member needs their own Royal Skies account first, all award miles move to the lead account and cannot be sent back, only status miles earned after joining count (earlier status miles stay behind), and leaving the group takes 12 months and written notice.
  • Short on miles for a reward. Royal Brunei lets members who hold at least 70% of the miles a reward flight needs buy the shortfall. The catch: purchased miles are USD 30 per 1,000 and the purchase is non-refundable.

Tips & quirks

Stopover rules, surcharges, the stuff nobody tells you until you've been burned once.

The fine print, decoded.

Spill the gotchas →
  • Alliance. Royal Brunei is not listed as a member of oneworld, Star Alliance or SkyTeam, so there is no alliance earning, lounge or status benefit.
  • Expiry. Royal Skies miles are valid for three years from the month earned. Elite Gold members keep non-expiring miles while they hold that tier. A membership stays active as long as there is mileage activity in the account within a 36 month period.
  • Miles extension. Miles can be extended for six months, once per calendar year, for a USD 30 service fee. Extended miles cannot be extended again.
  • Earning in the air. Miles are based on distance flown and the fare type, not on the price paid. The percentage of miles earned by fare: RB Business (J, Z, C) 175%, RB Business Saver (D) 150%, RB Flexi (Y, B, H, K, L, N, T) 120%, RB Value (W, M, X, U) 90%, RB Saver (R, S, Q) 60%, RB Super Saver (O, A, V, G) 30%.
  • Tier bonus. Silver members earn 50% bonus award miles and Elite Gold members earn 100% bonus award miles on eligible flights.
  • Who earns. Miles go only to the member who is flying, no matter who bought the ticket. Add your membership number to the booking, and allow up to 3 days for flight miles to appear. A missing mileage claim can cover flights taken within 6 months of enrolling.
  • Earning on the ground. The partner network covers hotels (Hyatt Hotels & Resorts and Royal Plaza on Scotts), dining, Hertz car rental, banks and lifestyle merchants in Brunei. Partner miles can take 6 to 8 weeks to post. No airline partners are listed on the official earning page.
  • Status miles versus award miles. Award miles are the ones you spend. Status miles count toward your tier and are earned flying Royal Brunei from 1 January to 31 December.
  • Qualifying for status. Silver takes 25,000 status miles or 20 eligible sectors in one calendar year. Elite Gold takes 50,000 status miles or 40 eligible sectors. Eligible sectors are one way flights booked as RB Flexi, Business Saver or Business. Miss the requirement and your tier drops one level.
  • Service fees, paid in USD or the local equivalent. Redemption nominee changes or deletions within six months of adding the nominee USD 30. Miles transfer between accounts USD 40 per 1,000 miles. Late change within 72 hours of departure USD 50. No show USD 100. Redeposit of unused awards USD 50.
  • Taxes and surcharges. Royal Skies miles cannot be used to pay the taxes and fuel surcharges on award tickets and upgrades.
  • Award rules. One or two stopovers are allowed on multi-sector awards, and a stopover means at least 24 hours in the city. A flight upgrade cannot be redeemed on an RB Saver or RB Super Saver ticket. Miles from two accounts cannot be combined on one upgrade redemption. A redemption ticket cannot be changed into a normal ticket.
  • Children. Members under 12 cannot redeem award tickets online unless a nominee aged 18 or older flies on the same flight.
  • No physical card. Membership cards are digital, available in your account or the RB Travel App.
