The Big Stack ends tonight. The event pays up to 10% back at its 250+ stores, and an eligible Amex cardholder who picks points gets 10X Membership Rewards in place of the cash. Some stores pay more, from 12% up to 20%, and the same ratio holds at any rate, so a store paying 15% gives you 15X.
The lineup runs from Gap, Nike, Macy's, PetSmart, Lego, Crocs and Hoka to travel names like Expedia, Hotels.com, IHG and Viator, where Viator is paying 14%, up from 2%. Travel is the spot for a points collector to read slowly: a travel purchase is typically confirmed 6 to 17 weeks after you finish the trip, so a booking for next spring pays out after you are home. The event window is for the click, not the trip.
The terms that matter:
- You earn points or cash back on a purchase, never both.
- Your Amex has to be enrolled in Membership Rewards, open and not past due, and linked in your Rakuten Account Settings. Corporate cards and the Rakuten Amex Card do not qualify.
- Points move in quarterly batches on Feb 15, May 15, Aug 15 and Nov 15, once you have more than 500 confirmed points, and anything smaller carries over. Shopping purchases are typically confirmed 3 to 14 weeks out.
- Each store keeps its own exclusions, and returns reverse the earnings.
