Austrian Airlines is the Vienna-based flag carrier of Austria (founded 1957) and a Lufthansa Group subsidiary since 2009. The fleet runs roughly 80 aircraft: Embraer 195, A320 family, 777-200ER, and 787-9 deliveries 2024-2025 that are gradually replacing the older 777s on long-haul. Hub is VIE (Vienna), a manageable single-terminal connecting airport that punches above its weight as a Eastern Europe gateway. US gateways include JFK, EWR, ORD, IAD, and LAX (verify current LAX status on austrian.com).
For US travelers, Austrian is the underrated Lufthansa Group play. The Austrian Business product on 777 / 787 is solid (lie-flat reverse herringbone) but less aspirational than LH First or SWISS First, which means saver award availability tends to open more readily than on flagship LH/SWISS routes. Aeroplan US-Vienna in business is roughly 60K one-way; Avianca LifeMiles US-VIE business is around 63K one-way. Same Miles & More umbrella, so award chart and tier benefits live on the M&M page. The carrier-specific advantages: more saver seats on average, and VIE is often a smoother transit hub than FRA/MUC during peak periods.

The cheat sheet.
Austrian metal redeems at Miles & More partner-chart pricing via partner Star programs, and at dynamic M&M-direct pricing when booked through Miles & More. The full award chart lives on the Miles & More page; key cells for Austrian as of May 2026:
| Route | Cabin | Best partner program | Approx. miles one-way |
|---|---|---|---|
| US-VIE | Business | Aeroplan | 60,000 |
| US-VIE | Business | LifeMiles | ~63,000 |
| US-VIE | Economy | Aeroplan | 35,000-45,000 |
| VIE-Eastern Europe | Business | Aeroplan | 15,000-25,000 |

Austrian operates the HON Circle Lounge, Senator Lounge, and Business Lounge at VIE - the standard Lufthansa Group three-tier lounge structure. Da Vinci Lounge serves Austrian Business passengers and Star Gold members. Star Alliance Gold from any partner gets reciprocal lounge access on same-day Star international flights. Across the rest of the network, Austrian premium passengers and Star Gold members access partner Star lounges.

Loyalty programs change rules, fees, transfer ratios, and award pricing all the time — sometimes without warning. We do our best to keep these pages current, but the program's own site is always the final word.
