Air Canada

Star AllianceHUBSYYZ · YVR · YUL1 active alert →Last reviewed May 2026

Air Canada is the Toronto-based flag carrier of Canada (founded 1937), with a separate loyalty program (Aeroplan) that crazy4points covers in detail on its own page. The fleet runs roughly 190 aircraft: A220, A320/321 family, A330-300, 737 MAX 8/9, 777-200LR/300ER, 787-8/9. Hubs are YYZ (Toronto Pearson) primary, YVR (Vancouver), and YUL (Montreal). US gateway coverage is unmatched among non-US carriers - 50+ US cities served from Canadian hubs, essentially every major US metro.

Air Canada Signature Class (long-haul Business) is one of the better North American premium-cabin products: 1-1-1 reverse herringbone lie-flat on 787, 777, A330. The Signature Suite at YYZ, YVR, LHR, and YUL is a tier-above-lounge dining experience for Signature Class international passengers, separate from the Maple Leaf Lounge network. The standout Aeroplan-driven sweet spot for AC metal: NO fuel surcharges on partner-program-issued AC awards since 2020. That fuel-surcharge-free policy is the headline value of Aeroplan and a structural advantage when redeeming on AC vs. virtually any other long-haul Star carrier. Award chart and tier benefits live on the Aeroplan page.

Award chart

The actual numbers. Get your nerd on, memorize the cheap ones.

The cheat sheet.

See the rates →

AC metal on Aeroplan is priced dynamically: the points price follows the cash fare, and the official Flight Reward Chart lists a starting amount and a median for Air Canada flights in each distance band, while partners outside the Select Partners group cost a fixed amount by distance. The full award chart lives on the Aeroplan page; key cells for AC:

Route Cabin Aeroplan miles one-way
Intra-North America short-haul Economy 6,000-12,500
US-Canada transcon Economy 12,500-15,000
US-Canada transcon Business (Signature) 25,000-35,000
North America-Europe Business (Signature) 60,000-70,000
North America-Asia Business (Signature) 75,000-87,500
Within North America Business 15,000-25,000

No carrier surcharges on AC metal via Aeroplan; only taxes and third party fees are charged in cash.

Changes, Cancellations & Delays

What to do when plans move: how to change or cancel an award, the fees, and your rights when a flight is delayed.

When plans change.

Know before you call →
  • How to change or cancel an award: You can cancel an Aeroplan flight reward online through Manage My Booking. You can cancel at no charge within 24 hours of making your booking. After that, you can cancel or change up to 2 hours before departure. If you cannot travel, cancel or change at least 2 hours before departure, or the ticket is forfeited and the points are not reinstated. While a fee may apply, when you cancel all your points come back, along with the taxes, fees and surcharges on the unused part of your trip, except taxes and fees that are nonrefundable by law. Changes are subject to availability and may need more points. The payment option you picked at booking cannot be changed when you make a voluntary change. The Aeroplan Contact Center is 1-800-361-5373 from Canada, the U.S. and the Caribbean.
  • Fees: All fees are charged in CAD and may be subject to applicable taxes. On Economy Standard and the lowest fare in Premium Economy, Business and First, a change is CAD 75 online or CAD 100 by phone, per direction and per ticket, and a cancellation is CAD 150 online or CAD 175 by phone, per ticket. Economy Flex changes are free, but canceling costs CAD 75 online or CAD 125 by phone, per ticket. Economy Latitude and the flexible fares in the other cabins have no change or cancellation fee. A same day change at the airport costs CAD 100 on Economy Standard, Economy Flex and Premium Economy Lowest. If your booking mixes fare options, the most restrictive cancellation fee applies, and the fee is nonrefundable. Air Canada notes that fees may be waived for eligible Elite Status Members. Changes and cancellations on flight rewards carry no fee for Aeroplan Super Elite members on rewards redeemed from their own account. Aeroplan 25K, 35K, 50K and 75K do not include this benefit. Booking a new award by phone carries a nonrefundable $30 CAD fee, even if the booking could not be completed online. A $39 CAD partner booking fee applies per ticket when the trip includes a flight operated by an airline other than Air Canada, Air Canada Express or Air Canada Rouge.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is Air Canada in Star Alliance? Yes. Air Canada is a founding member of Star Alliance.
  • Where are Air Canada's hubs? Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Air Canada runs its international network from those three hubs, with some international service from other Canadian cities such as Calgary and Halifax.
  • Can you use Aeroplan points on any Air Canada seat? Yes. Any Air Canada seat that is for sale in cash can be booked with Aeroplan points, across every fare class and with no blackout dates, though the points price follows the cash fare.
  • Does Air Canada add fuel surcharges to award tickets? No. Aeroplan does not charge airline surcharges on Air Canada flights booked with points, so you pay only taxes and third party fees such as airport fees, and those can be covered with points too.
  • Does Air Canada business class have lie flat seats? Yes, in Signature Class, its long haul business cabin. The seats convert to a fully flat bed and are offered on Air Canada's Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Airbus A330 and Airbus A321XLR aircraft.
  • Do Aeroplan business class awards get Signature Suite access? No, only the flexible business reward does. Air Canada excludes Standard business rewards, upgrades and business awards booked through partner airlines, and the Signature Suites are at Toronto Pearson and Vancouver for international Air Canada flights.
  • Can you get into a Maple Leaf Lounge flying Air Canada economy? No, not on an economy ticket by itself. Economy travelers get in with Aeroplan 50K status or higher, Star Alliance Gold or an eligible Aeroplan premium credit card, and Premium Economy, Latitude, comfort or Flex fares can buy access in advance, though not at the airport on the day.
