United Miles Pooling Now Works on 40+ Partner Airlines

United has removed the biggest limitation on its miles pooling feature. As of this month, miles pooled with family and friends can be redeemed on 40-plus United partner airlines - in and out of Star Alliance - not just United-operated flights. For households pooling toward a big international trip, this is a meaningful upgrade, because the best premium-cabin value often lives on partners like ANA, Lufthansa, and Air Canada.

Why this matters

Pooling lets up to five people combine miles into one pot, but until now that pot could only book United-operated flights - cutting pooled members off from the partner awards that are often the real sweet spots. Opening pooled miles to 40+ partners means a family can now pool toward ANA business class to Tokyo or Lufthansa First. The existing waiting periods still apply (72 hours after joining a pool, 24 hours after contributing), so set the pool up before you need to book.

United has lifted the main restriction on MileagePlus miles pooling: pooled miles can now be redeemed on more than 40 partner airlines, both inside and outside Star Alliance (Lufthansa, ANA, Air Canada, Virgin Australia and more). Previously, pooled miles could only book United- and United Express-operated flights.

Pooling lets up to five MileagePlus members combine miles into a shared pot. A couple of timing rules still apply:

  • 72-hour wait from joining a pool before you can contribute miles
  • 24-hour wait before contributed miles are available to spend

This matters most for long-haul international premium cabins, where partner awards are usually the best value - and now reachable with pooled miles.
