Starting September 8, every Air France or KLM award you book with Flying Blue miles comes in one of three fare tiers, and the cheapest one quietly strips the perks that made award travel worth it. Book before then to keep today's terms.

• Light (cheapest): no changes or refunds, no seat selection, no lounge access, and economy and premium economy lose the free checked bag.
• Standard: changes and refunds for a fee, still no seat selection.
• Flex: free changes and refunds, seat selection, the works.
• The catch: the cheapest award is only cheap because it comes stripped down. Keeping what you get today, like a checked bag and a changeable ticket, means paying more miles for a higher tier.
• What's safe: awards on SkyTeam partners are unchanged, any ticket issued before September 8 keeps its original conditions, and Platinum members keep full flexibility on Light at the floor price.
